Evenes Military Airbase in Norway Receives New OSL’s Counter-Drone Air Defence

The first of the new counter-drone systems is now operational at Evenes Military Airbase in Northern Norway, strengthening the Armed Forces' ability to neutralise unauthorised drone activity.

Evenes, Norway, March 12, 2026 - The new counter-drone system was installed at Evenes Military Airbase and entered service earlier this March. The system was deployed through a collaborative effort between OSL (the supplier), the Norwegian Armed Forces, the Norwegian Defence Estates Agency, and the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (FMA).
The counter-drone system from Operational Solutions Ltd (OSL) is identical to the one installed at Ørland Air Base, which is currently operational during the ongoing major exercise, “Cold Response”.
“Strengthening our defence against drones is one of the key priorities in the drone strategy presented by the Norwegian government before Christmas. It is therefore gratifying that Evenes Military Airbase now has drone defences in place,” said Norway’s Minister of Defence Tore O. Sandvik.
The delivery to Evenes is part of a planned roll-out of new counter-drone systems, also known as Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS).
These systems are designed to detect, identify, and manage drones that pose a potential threat. Counter-drone capability has become an essential component of modern air defence and will contribute to enhanced situational awareness and the ability to respond to unauthorised drone activity in the vicinity of the airfield.
The framework agreement with OSL was signed in August 2025. Only two months elapsed before the first system was in place at Ørland, and further deliveries are on the way.
“We conducted a thorough assessment of available solutions before the framework agreement was signed. Experience so far confirms that we have chosen a supplier that delivers high quality rapidly, with a system that can be further developed over time. This gives us confidence in our ongoing work to strengthen protection against drones,” said Brigadier Jarle Nergård, Head of Air Systems at FMA.
The system is already in use in several other countries. At both Ørland and Evenes Military Airbase, it will supplement and be integrated with existing air defence systems. It consists of a command and control (C2) system, sensors, and effectors - both kinetic and non-kinetic.
Evenes Military Airbase serves as a vital strategic hub for Norway, housing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and serving as a forward operating base for F-35A fighter jets, which have conducted NATO’s Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) missions from the site since 2022.
“The counter-drone system is an important addition to the further development of our air defences. It strengthens the ability to protect our bases and provides us with better conditions to meet new threats in the airspace effectively,” said Brigadier Thomas Orud Harlem, Commander of the Norwegian Air Force Weapons School.
