Odiham Lead Simulator Technician
Purpose of the role:
The Lead Simulator Technician for the Mk6 Chinook Helicopter simulator at RAF Odiham manages a small team of simulator technicians and has overall responsibility for the OSL contract with the client. The role ensures the maintenance and ongoing operation of Mk6 Chinook simulator, schedules, plans, and supports the work of others as required to meet time and quality targets. Provides technical expertise, advice and guidance to support the adoption of methods and tools and adherence to policies and standards.
Deals with problems and issues, managing resolutions, corrective actions, lessons learned, and the collection and dissemination of relevant information.
Maintains effective communication with our customer, Sub-prime contractor, and with the prime contractor.
Key job requirements and responsibilities:
- To plan preventive maintenance working around the Mk6 Chinook synthetic training systems flying program.
- To communicate and work with the prime contractor team in USA, facilitating simulator software and hardware updates.
- To ensure that contractual availability SLAs are met.
- Take the lead in complicated fault diagnosis to steer the team to approach fault diagnosis in a logical and effective manner.
- Continuously monitoring the workload and assign tasks to team members based on their own workload and abilities.
- To train and mentor team members allowing them to expand and build upon their existing skills and knowledge.
- Manage the teams leave requests, absence reporting and ensure attendance is effectively supported and recorded.
- Monitor and book the team's training knowledge that are required to work in the facility (health & safety, fire briefs etc).
- Comply and ensure teams compliance with all safety and security policies and procedures.
- Brief the facility manager on a regular and ad-hoc basis with engineering status and usable stats. Make sure the facility manager is fully aware of any ongoing issues and spare shortages that could impact the availability of the simulators.
- Check and audit the team's paperwork to ensure correctness and thoroughness.
Qualifications / skills and experience
- HNC or above in Engineering / Electronics discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Previous team leadership experience within an engineering setting.
- A good communicator able to interact with remote engineering teams, simulator instructors, aircrew, and with OSL Line Management and Senior Leadership.
- The ability to keep up to date with technical knowledge (both hardware and software) and pass that knowledge onto the team members.
- To make the correct decision based on sound knowledge and understanding of the needs and requirements of the facility. Must balance attention to detail with an understanding of wider operational requirements.
- Familiar with Microsoft Office programs, particularly Word and Excel.
- Experience and a good understanding of avionics and navigation concepts, flight simulation, aircraft sensors and inertial guidance.
